Andy Buchan – Reasons [Sprechen]

Kicking off the list with a track which is straight out of the leftfield. If you have listened to any Le Visiteur mixes you will know that I love tracks that are heavy on the groove and this one has groove aplenty.

Whilst the original track could barely be called disco Andy Buchan here has chopped and cajoled this one into a track which sits just perfectly alongside the big disco percussion throbbers I love.

Reasons has been a firm fixture in my DJ sets across the year and literally causes scenes every time it’s dropped.

Homegrown Syndrome – Party Vibes [Athens of The North]

Edinburgh’s Athens of the North is an outstanding label constantly unearthing long lost delights alongside their own perfectly realised originals. They have really defined their own Soul and Funk infused Disco sub genre.

This track is another brilliant example of the label’s endless quest to unearth long forgotten gems and give them a second chance to shine. Indeed these tracks didn’t even see release the first time round and were discovered on an acetate in Homegrown Syndrome’s Jerry Jones attic.

Hotmood – Together forever [Discoweey]

Hotmood has been one of the leading lights on the worldwide disco scene for quite a few years now and 2022 saw him hitting overdrive on his release schedule.

There were no end of his tracks which could have made this End of Year chart but I’ve gone for Together Forever on his own Discoweey label.

Pumping Sax, big bubbling bass, FX and vocal hooks aplenty this one is a peak-time groover all the way.

House Bros – Shake [Al Kent Remix] [Million Dollar Disco]

Another track which was unearthed on a long lost acetate before being handed to Al Kent to give it his touch.

With the addition of new drums, Rhodes Piano, strings and a heavy re-arrangement, which took the track from four minutes to nine, Al has crafted a bit of a classic right here which thankfully sees Shake getting the attention that it has always deserved.

Down Slow (JKriv) [Pantai People]

Razor-N-Tape’s JKriv had another stellar year with his label including the opening of the RnT flagship record store in Brooklyn as well as a strong slate of originals, remixes and edits in his own right.

Down Slow falls into the latter category and is another track which has figured heavily in my DJ sets this year to great aplomb.

With a monster build up which takes a good 2 minutes before slamming into a huge diva-esque vocal, funky guitars, and acidic come cosmic synth lines Down Slow ticks all the Slo-Mo dancefloor boxes.

Melvo Baptiste – Gonna be alright [Glitterbox]

Glitterbox radio show host Melvo Baptiste has become a real feature on the international scene over the last half decade and has more than proved his excellent taste in music between the well loved show and his energetic DJ sets across the globe.

Thankfully he has carried this superb taste and energy over into his own productions and gospel-tinged peak-time banger Gonna Be Alright, his collab with Jamie 3:26 and Annette Bowen, is his finest track to date.

Moodena & Soul Central – A glass of kool aid [Tropical Disco]

A label and artist dream team right here which perhaps unsurprisingly resulted in one of the biggest selling disco tracks of the year.

Funky as hell, Kool Aid has it all with ridiculously cool keys, a bassline that leads immediately to uncontrollable head nodding, hip shaking and then shape throwing.

Hopefully we will see this team in action again in 2023.

More Amour – Nightshift (Original) [Hi Quality Records Inc]

More Amour is the new collaboration from Artwork and Jon Solo and what a debut release this is.

Nightshift with it’s chunky ass-shakin’ drums, laser targeted spacey synths and hypnotic pads is a peak-time disco-bomb. Packed full of endless feel-good energy this one is perfectly lives up to their label ethos “hand crafted and made with love using the finest musicians and recording equipment available”

Apparently there are another 6 releases in the pipeline so we can’t wait for those to land in 2023.

Prime Time Band – Fall In Love In Outer Space (Turbotito Rework) [TSTD]

Too Slow To Disco had a huge 2022 even landing national compilation chart success in their native Germany.

Fall In love In Outer Space is another track with a great back story. Originally re-discovered by label boss DJ Supermarkt on a rare private press 7″ he managed to track down the original artist who gave the go ahead for the tracks to be re-released as part of TSTD 4.

The track caused such a huge response that they commissioned a whole host of remixes. You can check out the Turbotitio remix below perfectly described by DJ Supermarkt as a track which “hits that sweet spot between 80s funk-pop and the disco era’s love of anything galaxy-tinged”

Soul City Connecton – Brotherly Love [Big Love]

A modern disco classic which encompasses everything that is brilliant about the genre perfectly combining the 70’s feels with 20’s disco production nous.

The man behind this project Nigel Lowis has sold 16 million plus records globally and it’s very easy to see why on the strength of this wonderful track which also comes with a very tasty remix from
Jamie 3:26 & Danou P.

Also worth checking are the bootleg versions which combine the track with Riva Starr’s Love Divine which have just landed via Glitterbox.

This track is what disco is all about in a nutshell.

Yam Who & LaRae Starr – Taste Of Bitter Love [Midnight Riot]

2022 was very much the year that the disco world went remake crazy as it continued to move away from sample based releases.

One of the finest remakes landed early in the year from Midnight Riot boss Yam Who? who teamed up with LaRae Starr to deliver a tasty version of Gladys Knight’s classic Taste of Bitter love.

The super smooth original rightfully picked up huge support all year including spins from Dr Packer and Danny Krivit.

We premiered the Mark Brickman remix of Bitter Love which landed as part of Disco Made Me Do It Vol 5 in July, you can check that below.

Yuksek – Roulette [Partyfine]

Originally landing as part of his Clean Hard Drive EP and then featuring on Partyfine Vol VI Yuksek’s Roulette is another track which has caused all sorts of dancefloor carnage in my DJ sets.

Comprising a monster bassline, choppy burning-esque synth licks and vocal stabs this one is the epitome of less-is-more and boy does it go off in the clubs.

It’s been another great year for Yuksek and Partyfine and this one really hit the club nail on the head with huge support from Birdee, Da Lukas and Natasha Kitty Katt.

A timeless pumpin’ Disco heater.
