79.5’s 80’s Ladies Rare Groove Worship Mix

img

We featured 79.5’s eponymous album last year on our Disco Juice column as one of the disco releases of the month back in May. Soulful and psychedelic it combined a multitude of sounds and influences from 70’s disco to acid Jazz into something intimate and utterly delectable. Fast forward to April this year and now 79.5 and Razor-n-Tape are back with an EP of some of the highlights from the album remixed by some serious players. Step up JKriv, Malik Hendricks, Jubilee, Damien Harris and the brilliant FSQ whose take on 79.5 anthem B.D.F.Q. injects some serious sleazy dancefloor funk into the track.

To celebrate the release we had a quick chat with 79.5 about the EP and what they are up to right now in the studio and they also recorded a sumptuous worship mix packed with some of their favourite female led 80’s rare groove, and as you might expect it’s rather brilliant. Check it out above and if it kicks your dancefloor off please give it a share over on Soundcloud and help us spread the love. You can check the full tracklist below.

Hi 79.5

Good to speak to you today.

Where are you currently and what are you up to right now?

We’re based in NYC and getting started on some new recordings.

Please can you tell our readers a little about 79.5, who are you and how would you describe your musical vibe right now in 2024?

I started the project around 2010, and we’ve been rocking with the current lineup since 2019. The music is often hard to describe, but we get comparisons to ESG, Jones Girls, and B-52s often.  I love all of those, but I just think we are 79.5 when we get together.

Please tell us about the scene where you are based. Which artists from your local scene past and present have inspired and encouraged you and what parties that you love going to have helped your musical evolution?

I believe that the city itself is an inspiration, and the scene currently feels very supportive. Razor-N-Tape throws a monthly party called Joyful Noise which is so fun, and I enjoy just seeing my bandmates’ other projects.  A lot of us play records out too, in addition to playing live music, which is always an inspiring hang. Especially for us music nerds.

Please can you choose 3 of your own tracks which are quintessentially 79.5 and tell us a little about why you have chosen them.

Club Level

It always brings the band back together. Love playing this live.

B.D.F.Q.

This is our anthem.

Long Term Parking

It’s all about Izaak, and his beautiful sax line.

Also, Victoria Imperioli directed this beautiful video.

You released your second album 79.5 last year with Razor-N-Tape and you have just released a Remix EP of tracks from the album featuring Malik Hendricks, JKriv, Jubilee, Damien Harris and FSQ. What do you think those producers brought to your tracks?

They just really brought a whole new light to the music, and it’s been really cool to hear what each artist has imagined for the tracks.

Have you started work on your next album and if so how is it going?

Quietly working and loving it.

You have just recorded a Ladies Rare Groove Worship Mix for Le Visiteur. Why did you choose your particular genre and how did those artists influence you personally?

I personally chose those songs because they’ve all inspired me at some point. It’s important to give props to the ladies that have influenced us.

What are some of the key tracks in the mix which have really resonated with you and in turn have influenced 79.5?

Carole King, I Feel The Earth Move, because she’s always been a huge inspiration as a songwriter.

La’Verne Washington, I Found What I’ve Been Searching For

This song is so so good! Carol Kaye on the bass too!

Which other artists DJ mixes do you find yourself coming back to time and again and do you have a favourite that you gravitate towards?

Chances With Wolves, Eli Escobar, Edan, DJ Miss Hap, Jubilee – all so great!

What else can we expect from 79.5 in 2024?

We’ve grown quite a bit, feels like we are just getting started.

Thanks for talking to us today!
