Surprise Chef – High On Your Love (Harvey Sutherland / Masters At Work Remixes)
Mr Bongo

At the vanguard of Melbourne’s bustling underground music scene you’ll find Surprise Chef. A band very much on the rise, who with two exceptional albums under their belts, are picking up a rapidly swelling fanbase across the world. When floating ideas for potential remixers, two names came to the fore, Masters At Work and Harvey Sutherland. The ‘Crayfish Caper – ’Nuyorican Broken Remix’ is straight up vintage MAW in House mode. A Latin shuffle meets an afro-beat rhythm and some very chunky broken beats, which all underpins an infectious melody constructed around the original track’s bassline. Rounding off the package is the remix from Harvey Sutherland. A dreamy, cosmic, bass-heavy, sweeping synth-led workout, that retains yet reinterprets the catchy-as-hell hooks from the original track. A roller with serious muscle!

Freeez – Keep In Touch
Far Out Recordings

Far Out Recordings presents a double bill of two monumental Brit funk classics. Keep In Touch and Stay were the first two 12” singles by the iconic Freeez from founding member John Rocca, for his own Pink Rhythm imprint. Going against the advice of all the musicians involved, who thought he was mad and set to lose all his money, John decided to go full DIY, hire out a high end studio in the West End to record ‘Keep In Touch. It was a surprise underground hit selling over 5000 copies and reaching #49 in the UK, leading Freeez into a record deal with Pye / Calibre. These foundational DIY 12” singles paved the way for Freeez to become a household name in the history of British funk who went on to record hits like ‘Southern Freeze’ and ‘IOU’.

Andromeda Orchestra – Dance Closer EP
Faze Action Records

It’s more original dub disco throbbers from Andromeda Orchestra. Robin Lee (one half of the infamous Faze Action duo) returns with a fine 4 tracker EP ‘Dance Closer’ that sees his signature organic production style right where it should be; front and centre. Accompanying the title track is a darker, dub work out called “Primo Ventura” along with the Salsoul-esque “Inferno,” before the stuttering mid tempo “Hoops,” with its slap bass and wigged out synths, rounds things off. Oozing with disco dub goodness, this four track EP is one you’ll be reaching for at any occasion.

Kon aka King Of Nothing – Messin / Stop (Rock The House)
Star Time

Edit guru Kon aka King of Nothing steps back up to the oche to take care of business. Now reaching the dizzy heights of release numero 3 on Star Time, it’s another deadly pair of red hot & uber limited jams that have been mined from the record bins of the world. First up is the party starter ‘Messin,’ a rolling groove led by a glorious vocal chant ‘Messin with my mid’ and a soothing trumpet from beginning to end. On the flip is ‘Stop (Rock The House)’ which is stacked with block party chants, psychedelic guitar licks and a phat bass that will rock any dance this autumn.
