Foreword by Le Visiteur

So here we are at the official start of summer here in Europe. Cue outdoor BBQ’s, boat parties, rooftop gigs and festivals aplenty and of course it’s officially time to pack those suitcases and hit Ibiza. As you would expect the heads behind Midnight Riot are involved in all of the above, with gigs to look out for including both team Midnight riot and Yam Who? hitting the intriguing The Little Disco, a brand new event with a HUGE lineup at Lio, Monday’s in Ibiza. Jaegerossa can also be found heading to Beat Hearder in July.

On the release front this month see’s tracks dropping from Smoke Balls with a very tasty Qwestlife remix, Nick Hussy , Uri Allgood as well as Guy Preston and Adrian Crutchfield’s Prince inspired Purple Heart which we wholeheartedly approve of here at LV. The big one though is Jaegerossa’s immense Disputed, more on that below.

As always if you are looking for your monthly fix of Midnight Riot, make sure you check out the podcast with the most recent edition featuring scene legend DJ Spen.

Now it’s time to hand you over to Yam Who? who has picked his 9 essential disco releases for June and it’s safe to say that there is some serious heat incoming!

Disco Juice 9 Essential tunes of the month
Roisin Murphy Hit Parade

Róisín Murphy – Hit Parade (Ruf Dug + Payfone Remixes)

[Ninja Tune]

Róisín Murphy’s forthcoming album Hit Parade, produced by DJ Koze, lands on Ninja Tune this September. The album features 13 new tracks that encompass “hip-hop, playful psychedelia and elegant soulful grooves”, a project six years in the making, with the duo working remotely almost the entire time.

In the lead up to the full album, two ultra exclusive remixes land from Manchester-born crate digger Ruf Dug and rising production wizard Payfone, both without release dates.

Ruf Dug delves into the abyss, creating a rolling chugger brimming with squelchy bass, ominous synths and stripped-back drum work. Payfone’s interpretation of ‘You Knew’ pairs in similar sonic fashion, fusing bouncy basslines with skippy drums and Murphy’s iconic vocals.

No sound clips around for these as yet but you can order and check out one of the tracks from the album below.

Don Blackman Say Youll Be Mine

Don Blackman – Say You’ll Be Mine

[Mr Bongo]

A vault of formerly unreleased Don Blackman material recently surfaced via the Chicago DJ/producer/digger Marc Davis, who in recent years struck up a relationship with the children of the mysterious New York pianist and songwriter.

Now this wealth of jams finally gets released: 40 years’ worth of unheard Blackman – cassettes, CDs, discs, reel-to-reels, paperwork, even VHS tapes – inevitably once more reignites the obsessive fan interest in his music, which sprang from its already-mystical cult status in the rare funk and soul-digging world.

Gloria Ann Taylor Be Worthy Flying Mojito Bros Refritos

Gloria Ann Taylor – Be Worthy (Flying Mojito Bros Refritos)

[Ubiquity]

Founded in 1990, Ubiquity continues to be a label synonymous with authenticity and quality. For the label’s next release, the Flying Mojito Bros do their desert thing on Gloria Ann Taylor’s ‘Be Worthy’. Taylor was a cult sensation and in the 1970s she laid the groundwork for much of the disco, R&B, and modern soul we know today. Fast forward to 2023, her posthumous release ‘ Be Worthy’ gets reimagined by the Flying Mojito Bros into a euphoric, gospel-piano-house beauty. Dusty desert disco duo, Flying Mojito Bros are stoked to be invited to rework such an important heritage artist, and they deliver in a most fitting dedication to the towering musical legacy, and pioneering genre-crossing track. The record looks as good as it sounds too, with FMBs colourful and cosmic reimagining of the original cover art via illustration wizard Nick Potts.

John Rocca I Want It To Be Real LNTG Edit

John Rocca – I Want It To Be Real – LNTG Edit

[South Street]

An ‘80s classic ‘I Want It To Be Real’ from the legend John Rocca (Southern Freeze) gets a fresh new take from Aussie edit king Late Nite Tuff Guy, backed up with a remastered reissue of Chicago house royalty Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk’s 1987 Hot House Piano Remix. The main man behind jazz funk favourites Freeez, John Rocca took to the studio in ’84 and whipped up an electro-fied steamer in the form of ‘I Want It To Be Real’. Tantalizing synthwork, beefed up basslines, gated snares and pure ‘80s vocals, it’s a melting pot of influences with a catchiness that caused a serious stir. This brand-new mix from Late Nite Tuff Guy builds up the brilliance with masterful effect, keeping the vocal in the back pocket till the final frontier whilst adding in some buttery new synth magic and deft filtering to the mix.

Marvin Gaye I Wanna Be Where You Are I Want You

Marvin Gaye – I Wanna Be Where You Are / I Want You

[South Street]

2 classics from Gaye’s esteemed catalogue & never seen on 12 inch wax before, ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ and ‘I Want You (alternative mixes) have been plucked from the Deluxe Edition of the ‘I Want You’ album.

First up ‘I Wanna Be Where You Are’ written by the magical pairing of Leon Ware and Arthur ‘T-Boy’ Ross, an abbreviated cover of Michael Jackson’s hit, this new version clocks in at over 6 minutes, extending those delectable grooves, building and breaking with a sun-kissed, funk channeling feeling that washes over like a warm wave.

On the flip, ‘I Want You’ was written by the same duo as the A, with Leon Ware once again on the production and released as part of the same ’76 album. An LP that introduced a change in musical styles for Gaye, songs such as this gave him a disco audience thanks to Leon Ware. Sunrise or sunset, this one is not to be used lightly – tears of joy on the dancefloor guaranteed.
