Disco Juice Essential White 1

Silk – Can’t stop (turning you on) [Michael Gray Remix]
Label : DMC

Michael Gray is the master of adding dancefloor weight & production to classic 70s & ’80s material. Here he delivers another essential revision this time on the lesser known Silk ‘Can’t Stop’ (turning you on). Released in 1979 on Philadelphia International, the original had a real ‘2 Step’ feel, Michael rightly does the business here fusing flamboyant new bass and disco house beats, slightly upping the tempo and turning ‘Can’t Stop’ into a peak-time extravaganza that will appeal right across the board!

Unkle – Do Yourself Some Good [The Reflex Revision]
Label : Unknown

Adding warmth and depth, you can hear why The Reflex is the king of the disco mix on his remix of ‘Do Yourself Some Good’ from James Lavelle’s legendary Unkle. The Reflex leans into the arpeggiated synths, before the silky smooth disco beat hits. The track slowly builds as the temperature rises and the bassline and vocal samples come in. Over on the flip you can also check out ‘If We Don’t Make It’ remixed by Ronin. It’s altogether more laidback with new layers of percussion having been brought to the forefront here. With both tracks clocking in at just under 10 minutes each, these dancefloor weapons are guaranteed to keep the party going.

Freeez – Mariposa
Label : Far Out Recordings

Continuing to shine a light on John Rocca & co’s pioneering early 80s music, Far Out presents the first ever 12” release of Freeez’s monster brit-funk classic “Mariposa”, along with the equally heavy and hard to find 12” mix of “Alone”. Released on their debut album Southern Freeez in 1980, “Mariposa” is fearsomely funky, high-tempo, melodic jazz-funk featuring Paul Morgan’s lighting drum fills, Peter Maas’s slapping and popping, Andy Stennett’s top-drawer keys and John Rocca’s percussion and otherworldly Spanish vocals. ”Alone”, originally released as the B-side to Freeez’s “One to One” single in 1982, is a cool, heady boogie stepper, and this elusive extended 12” mix is a no brainer for any discerning jazz/funk boogie jock.

House Bros – Shake [Al Kent Remix]
Label : Million Dollar Disco

Al Kent is back with a mysterious remake, a modern but authentic disco epic that could just as easily have been recorded and mixed in the 70’s in a New York studio. The legend goes that the House Bros originally recorded this song in Hollywood in 1979, cut it to acetate and then seemingly forgot all about it. This sole acetate was destined for obsolescence until it was discovered some 40 years later by a devoted Northern Soul DJ. Not content with just driving dance-floors wild with his discovery, he asked Al Kent to “do something” with it. And boy did he do that!
