2020 was a blockbuster year for Yam Who? Midnight Riot and all of his assorted labels. A quick look through the highly coveted Traxsource end of year charts shows Midnight Riot Releases peppering the Genre charts and compilation charts with Mark Brickman also landing the 34th biggest selling track of the year in the shape of Again & Again for MR a huge achievement in what, despite it’s obvious dark edges, was a golden year for electronic music.
With a huge slate of releases already confirmed for 2021 it’s looking like even bigger things afoot for Yam Who and his labels and we are already looking forward to the brighter days when we can catch Yam Who?, Qwestlife and Midnight Riot live again. Defected Croatia 2021 anyone?

Louie Vega – Vince Montana Tribute (RickLou NYC Piano Groove)

This collaboration came about through an edit Rick sent to Louie and the major response whenever Louie played it at his parties. Considering Louie’s longtime love for Vince Montana, he decided to go large, bringing in Elements of Life band members Gene Perez (Bass), Axel Tosca (Fender Rhodes) and Luisito Quintero (Congas). Adding the piano line himself, Louie was able to bring out the most authentic disco elements of this superlative groove but rework them so they are exactly in the pocket for today’s dancefloors worldwide.

2021 sees Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets launch under their new alias Dam Swindle and their first release is The Spice Run EP. The A side features guest vocals from Detroit’s & Mahogani Music’s Nikki O who applies her sultry tones to EP opener Breathe. Her vocals sit perfectly over the live percussion and bass, courtesy of Dutch bass veteran Charles Nagtzaam. Title track Spice Run features percussionist Chris Bruining (Mauskovic Dance Band) on this uptempo cut. Italy’s Marcello Cassanelli works his keyboard magic on the jazzy Get Together, resulting in an EP that blends genres so effortlessly it will guarantee to feature in sets throughout the year!
