Yam Who? – Disco Juice – January 2022

We hope that you had a fantastic Christmas and NYE wherever you were. We head into 2022 with hope that this year will start to see our scene start to recover from the difficulties of the last couple of years and we can start to look forward again. One of the few positives of the pandemic lockdowns has been the sheer amount of incredible music that has come our way as producers focused their time and attention from being on the road to being in the studio. If you want a real snapshot of just how vibrant the disco scene has become recently check back on Yam Who’s Disco Juice columns from 2021 which you can check HERE.

2022 is also a rather important year for Midnight Riot, Yam Who’s label, which celebrates it’s 10th anniversary with some huge releases and events planned. It’s a very impressive milestone given all that has gone on across that decade within the club scene. Opening up their proceedings for the year hotly tipped producer Andy Bach has his rather sublime Dimitri’s House EP out this coming Friday and it’s seriously tasty indeed.

We are very pleased to invite Yam Who? back to Le Visiteur for the first Disco Juice of the year and if his choices are a snapshot of things to come for the disco universe in 2022 then it’s going to be a very fine year indeed x

JKriv feat Norman Vladimir – The Way
Glitterbox Recordings

We kick off the new year in fine style from Glitterbox and JKriv who joins forces with vocalist Norman Vladimir on the rather fine ‘The Way’. As expected Kriv brings superb original instrumentation, smoothly grooving somewhere between early New York Garage House and late night Boogie. Topped off by a terrific lead vocal from the irrepressible Vladimir, who delivers a feel good message for these troubling times ahead. The package comes with an authentic deep mix from Kriv exposing his punchy drums, killer soulful b line and dubbing out Norman’s delayed vocals to the max.

Mystic Jungle – Deviant Disco
Periodica Records

For lovers of all things disco boogie cosmica and afro then check the latest longplayer from Periodica Records head honcho Dario de Pace. Four years on since his last album he’s back with his Mystic Jungle project and without doubt his most dancefloor accessible excursion to date. Opening number ‘Don’t Stop Your Love’ is a superb squelchy synth-boogie affair, while the track that follows, ‘Get Down On It’, is all things electro, funk, Chic and the proto-house sound. Flipside we have ‘Hold On To Your Dreams’ a Balearic meets AOR number, ‘Money Wonder’ is a dubbed-out Afro-cosmic disco shuffler and ‘Keep Alive This Fire’ is a wonky Italo-disco throb-job.

Mary Mundy – Love Me Love Me / Love Is Gone (Patchouli Brothers Edits)
Dodo Records

Toronto’s Patchouli Brothers have long been making a name for themselves as respected DJs, disco remixers and editors in today’s scene. Their first inaugural release is a collaboration with vocalist Mary Mundy, now a university professor, who continues to sing to this day. Mary cut only one mythical album in 1980 entitled ‘Mother Nature’, an ultra rare and collectible LP that today commands eye watering prices. This first release on Dodo boasts 2 of her finest cuts: ‘Love Me Love Me’ and ‘Love Is Gone’, both reworked from the original tapes with immense love and respect by the Patchouli Brothers, and with Mary’s involvement and permission.

Chaka Khan – Our Love’s In Danger – DJ Reverend P Edit
Reverend P Edits Vol.4

After previous releases on Sony, Gamm & Vega definitely head over to The Reverand’s Bandcamp page to grab the latest in his series of edits. The last cut on Chaka’s 1980 album ‘Naughty’ is given new life by the Parisian scappel maestro and as expected you won’t be disappointed. With Chaka at the height of her disco powers ‘Our Love’s In Danger’ is an overlooked forgotten anthem from the golden era, complete with an elastic live bass, euphoric strings, heavy piano stabs and certified a sax solo with The Reverend delivering a cheeky bit of edit wizardry that will sure to get heads nodding and butts moving.

Jonnie Vibes Lambert – Can’t Stop Dancin’
Fraternity/Und Brother

This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12″ changing hands for silly money online. Now on this 7” reissue. ‘Can’t Stop Dancing’ is sweet and summery, with spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. The flipside instrumental is reminiscent of the P&P – Patrick Adams vibe making excellent use of the original’s female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.
