It’s getting decidedly wintery over here in the UK but that hasn’t stopped the conveyor belt of disco heat landing via Midnight Riot over the past few weeks. There have been monster tracks from Mystic 2, Phonk D, Ben Banjo Field and Tom Caruso and a stand out album in the shape of The House Sound of Midnight Riot, Vol. 1 which is packed with disco house gems and features top 10 smash Freak It! 21 from Mark Brickman. Indeed it’s also been a busy month for Mark who sprinkled his magic production dust over Platinum City’s Time For A Change for Midnight Riot, which you can check below, and which also did it’s fair share of chart damage.

Thankfully label boss Yam Who has still managed to squeeze in his monthly edition of Disco Juice for us, packed with some of the finest upcoming disco bliss that will be laying siege to clubs and festivals over the coming months. Check out his 9 essential tunes of the month below!

Al Kent – Rain
Million Dollar Disco

As we roll towards the end of the year, Million Dollar Disco’s Al Kent turns in another epic with ‘Rain’. It’s a combination of one of history’s greatest vocalists with one of our era’s most gifted discotizers and you’d expect ‘Rain’ is another classic bubbler. From the epic choppy piano intro and warm string it’s another great-sounding mix that gently rises from the off, with the well recognisable female vocals working their way around your ears it’s pretty certain that this record will find its way into an awful lot of DJ’s boxes.

Dames Brown – What Would You Do
Defected

Detroit’s Dames Brown epitomise the very best of their hometown’s unparalleled musical heritage. The vocal trio (Athena Johnson, Teresa Marbury and LaRae Starr) may not yet be household names but you certainly know their voices. Having featured on Sophie Lloyd’s ‘Calling Out’, The Vision featuring Andreya Triana ‘Heaven’ and David Penn’s ‘Nobody’ in recent years, ‘What Would You Do’ the first standalone single from their debut album is produced by long-time collaborator Amp Fiddler & DJ Dez Andrés. A record that captures funk, house and soul from across the spectrum and makes a fitting first release to represent Dames Brown’s diverse musicality, with exquisite production, striking song-writing and a hefty dose of house authenticity working together to create a future classic.

Ja-Shay – Sing Hallelujah (Dave Lee Brotherhood Mix)
Z Records

‘Reverend Lee’ returns to the pulpit with the help of Ja-Shay. ‘Shout Hallelujah’ is a powerful gospel house cut straight out of New Jersey featuring the vocals of Liz Yancey. Reworking the original with Incognito’s Matt Cooper and his hair raising Organ skills, Dave summons up the Holy Spirits blending stompin’ drums, 90’s house bassline and bouncy piano riffs. Turning up the jack factor a notch, the Dub version focuses more on the groove and letting the Organ player truly shine on. If this doesn’t have the dancefloor rejoicing then what on earth will?

Soul Of Hex – Say It Again
Delusions Of Grandeur

Brothers Gerardo and Emanuel Cedillo were born and raised in Mexico’s infamous border city Tijuana where, for the past decade, the duo have been immersed in the underground scene. DJing, promoting events, performing live sets. ‘Say It Again’ opens this release in fine style with a high energy disco-inspired workout featuring Gerardo’s bass playing, dubbed out vocals and raw to the core, rolling groove. ‘Pharaoh Machine’ goes heavy on the filtered synths, squelching bassline and bumpy house groove, creating another slice of dance-floor pleasure. Closing the release we have the low-slung deeper mood of ‘Dreams’ which incorporates moody Detroit pads, spacey vocals and a loping, shuffled groove to great effect.

Maulawi, Fito Foster – Street Rap / Salsa feat. DJ Amir, Re,decay, DJ Dez Andrés, Amp Fiddler
BBE Music

DJ Amir and Re.decay return to BBE Music with a rework of Maulawi’s ‘Street Rap’, plus a new version of Fito Foster’s ‘Salsa’ by DJ Dez (aka Andrés) featuring Amp Fiddler.
Originally issued as the opening track on Maulawi’s self-titled 1974 album by Detroit’s Strata Records, ‘Street Rap’ is a slept-on jazz/funk classic. Working with the original stems, Amir goes more mid-tempo, a ‘four to the floor’ updated groover. Another unique twist to the story, DJ Dez Andrés remixes ‘Salsa’, where his father sang and played on the original Fito Foster song bringing in Amp Fiddler to play additional keys and piano on the session.
