AXNER are a partnership between Chris Davies (Disco Freaks/Acid Jazz/ Defected) and Swedish singer Julia Axnér. Their new release ‘Shout From The Rooftop’ is as glossy and golden as disco gets! Here we ask the duo to take us back to theirs after a heady disco night out at the club. The drinks are flowing, the mood is high, and this is the playlist.
‘Shout From The Rooftop’ is out now on vinyl featuring wicked mixes from Al Kent and John Morales. Grab it via: https://www.juno.co.uk/products/axner-shout-from-the-rooftop-feat-al-kent-vinyl/952566-01/
Booker T. Jones Feat Rita Coolidge – We Could Stay Together
C&J: Such a great groove and soulful track. First heard someone play it late night at Glastonbury at one of the interstage bars. Soundtracked a real nice moment for us both.
Niki & The Dove – Play It On The Radio
J: Swedish group I’ve loved for years and became even more special when we found out Alan Braxe worked on it. We’ve been inspired by Braxe & Falcon’s sets over the last year and been to see them every time they’ve been in London. Couldn’t believe it when they played this and found out after Braxe produced it!
AXNÉR – Shout From The Rooftop
C&J: Our latest release. Still feels surreal to have worked with such a disco supergroup on this release. Two members of Chic, John Morales, Al Kent, Kousto, Joel Sarakula plus our friends & family that sung on the big chorus. It’s very much a collaboration and it’s been a lot of fun bringing it together. Very excited for the vinyl to arrive. Nothing compares to holding the physical release. Big love to everyone that’s been involved in this & to you Le Visiteur for the support from the start!
O.V. Wright – The Bottom Line
C: Such a beautiful soul track. Only heard it last year on a show on Netflix. The absolute truth on record.
Kesmar – Johatsu (Feat. Flore Benguigui)
C & J: We’re big fans of Flore’s group L’Imperatrice and love this collaboration with Kesmar, one half of Lazywax, a production duo who make great dance music & remixes. This one’s got a lovely yacht rock vibe that we’re into and it’s nice to hear your favourite artists doing something different.
Sault – Higher
C & J: Stand out group of the last few years. Inflo, the producer behind Sault has got to have had the most prolific output of recent times. This one’s a beautiful piece featuring his partner Cleo Sol that’s a perfect soundtrack for when the sun’s coming up and creeping through the curtains.
AXNÉR – Got The Look
C & J: Our first release and video. Felt pretty special teaming up with Ralph Rolle, drummer of Nile Rodgers & Chic, to create this track. We learnt a lot from Ralph on the production side and are grateful to know him. It’s been fun working out ways of doing things like music videos on a low budget. This we filmed during a Disco Freaks club night in Hackney. Shout out to our good friends Rosanna & Sophia who filmed and edited this!
Aretha Franklin – One Step Ahead
J: One of my favourite songs by my all-time favourite vocalist, The Queen of Soul. Timeless and feel like it fits every mood. A perfect balance of emotion between feel good and melancholy.
Thelma Houston – Saturday Night, Sunday Morning
J: Beautiful end of night song. Soulful, danceable and a great vocal delivery. Everything I want from a song all rolled into one and can’t help smiling anytime I hear it.
Stephane Sévérac – Hold On
C: What a song! Beautiful, Balearic, late night 80s, synth, gospel set closing epic wonder. Don’t know much about the artist and whether they had another release but this is fantastic. Been ending DJ sets with it for the last few years (when the times right). Vocal could be George Michael after a long night in Pikes in places.
