Q1: Who is Massiande?
Hi! I’m Massiande. I’m 32 years old. I’m a House music artist. Very passionate about House music, mainly Deep and Soulful House. It feeds my spirit.
I’ve loved Disco and Soul since an early age, that’s where I come from. And then that led me to get to know House. I’m much more closely attached to the classic shapes of House music than modern, because I feel those classic forms are warmer and more emotive. I believe that reflects in my music and personality as well.
Q2: Please can you give us three tracks from your discography which are quintessentially Massiande?
Yesterday, Today, Forever [from “Yesterday, Today, Forever” EP – Freerange Records]
With this song I wanted to describe what classic House music forms are: simple, warm, emotive. Music that may sound vintage but will never be old. Music that’s timeless.
The name “Yesterday, Today, Forever” is inspired by the Motown Records 25th Anniversary special.
Be With Me [from “Freedom” EP – Phonica Records]
This is a love song without words. Just feelings expressed in the shape of Deep House.
Dancing Stuff (I Love The Way) [from “Dancing Stuff” EP – Midnight Riot Records]
An attempt at making Disco without an actual orchestra. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to produce with one, to make even more beautiful songs. I dream about producing a Disco band.
Q3: What is your latest release?
My newest release is named “Dancing Stuff (I Love The Way)”. It is my first project fully devoted to trying my abilities as a producer to express my Disco influences.
It’s a project that took quite some time to get done. “Dancing Stuff”, the lead track, took me about a year to complete. I wanted it to feel right, blending the acoustic and synth elements nicely. Also one of the songs, “United We Funk” was actually made 4 or 5 years ago. It hadn’t found its place on any of my previous releases because I mainly make Deep House. But it fit in with these other songs that I made in the past year, and it all came together as a solid, well-formed EP.
I’m particularly fond of “The City”, it has a complex arrangement of a lot of instruments and ambience sounds to make the result very uplifting and with character.

Q4: Please tell us about the electronic scene where you are based. What artists do you love past and present that have inspired and encouraged you and what parties that you love going to have helped the musical evolution of Massiande?
I live in Santiago and the Chilean club scene is based on Techno and Tech-House. So, in my country, unfortunately there are very few DJs that relate to House in the way I perceive it. Yet I know people love the more soulful House, I see it when I DJ. I wish the local promoters’ perspective could change, but it’s very hard, especially since promoters are so used to doing the same things over and over without innovating. So I have to mostly look abroad for inspiration.
My favorite House artists that have and still inspire me the most are Larry Heard and Ron Trent. I wouldn’t say they’re from the past, because they keep making wonderful music which is also different from what they did 10 years ago. Whenever I need to go back to my deepest feelings around House, I listen to them.
As for younger producers, the ones that I find to be really great are Cody Currie and Crackazat from the UK, and Chaos in the CBD from New Zealand. I hope they all keep their soulful and jazzy sound, that they don’t change it in the face of success as so many other artists do.
About inspirational parties, the best party I’ve been to has been “Body & Soul” with Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit. I felt completely in my element there, it was a moment that reassured me that House music and Soul and Disco can produce experiences that speak to your heart and spirit, that they give dance music a real sense of healing purpose, and that they’re the sound I always want to be closer to because I share the same purpose when DJing.
Q5: Who are your greatest influences as a producer?
Artist influences that I can hear somehow in my sound:
Larry Heard
Shonky – Le Velour (Mr. Fingers Club Dub Remix) – Real Tone Records
Larry (or as most people know him, Mr. Fingers) is the House artist that changed my perspective about electronic dance music. His music made me fall in love with Deep House as nothing else had before. His vibe is unique, and he unintentionally set a path for all House producers after him who wanted to add depth to their music.
Usually people share his classics, so I’ve chosen to share a more recent song of his that I go back to all the time.
Jimpster
Photon Inc. feat. Paula Brion – Generate Power (Jimpster Main Mix) – Strictly Rhythm
I try to be as versatile as I can be, because I always want to be learning and trying different things. All my EPs are different from each other, but what they always have in common is that they want to express emotivity through dance music. And Jimpster is as good and diverse as you could wish for a House producer. I look up to him because he’s also one of the finest examples of being incredibly consistent for the last 15 years or so, which is something that is very hard to accomplish. And he has a very distinctive way to represent the modern shapes of Deep House, without sounding out of place. I love that.
Kerri Chandler
Rising the Sun – Ibadan Records
Kerri is the rawness, the depth, the soul, the drive, the strength of House – all at the same time.
Some of my upcoming music has a lot of his spirit (gladly he’s said that himself :-)). I didn’t intend my music to have some of that vibe, it just happened. I guess that when you listen to someone’s art for so many years and internalize it, that happens. So that makes it even better.
Other artists that I’d like to mention are Wamdue, Basement Boys, Blaze, Eddie Pérez, Frankie Feliciano, Ashley Beedle, Ten City, Wayne Gardiner, Atjazz, Patrice Scott, Fred P.
Q6: What else can we expect from Massiande in the next 12 months?
Actually my best music is waiting to be released! I’m glad to share that I’ve recently been signed by Ibadan Records. And I have a couple of projects that I want to release on vinyl, that I feel are really the best House music I’ve ever done. I’ve spent the last couple of years learning and making new things, and I really wouldn’t want to wait much longer to have it released, but corona is holding things for many people. I’m hoping to be able to share this music with everyone very very soon 🙂

Q3: ¿Cuál es tu último lanzamiento?
Mi lanzamiento más reciente se llama “Dancing Stuff (I Love The Way)”. Es mi primer proyecto enteramente dedicado a probar mis habilidades como productor musical para expresar mis influencias Disco.
Es un proyecto que me tomó bastante tiempo completar. “Dancing Stuff”, la canción principal, me tomó alrededor de un año terminarla. Quería que se sintiera bien, mezclando los elementos acústicos con los sintetizados de buena manera. Otra de las canciones, “United We Funk”, la hice en realidad hace 4 o 5 años. No tenía lugar en mis discos anteriores porque principalmente hago Deep House. Pero calzó con estas otras canciones que hice el año pasado, así que afortunadamente todo se juntó en un EP sólido, bien formado.
Me gusta particularmente “The City”, tiene una programación compleja de bastantes instrumentos y sonidos de ambiente para dar un resultado muy animado y con carácter.

Q4: Por favor dinos sobre la escena electrónica de donde estás. ¿Qué artistas te encantan del pasado y presente que te han inspirado y motivado? ¿Y qué fiestas a las que has asistido han ayudado a la evolución musical de Massiande?
Vivo en Santiago. Y la escena club chilena se basa en Techno y Tech-House. Entonces en mi país hay muy pocos DJs que se relacionen con la música House de la manera en que yo percibo esta música. Aunque sé que al público le encanta el House con más soul, lo veo cuando toco como DJ. Quisiera que la perspectiva de los clubes locales cambie, pero se hace muy difícil, especialmente cuando los promotores están tan acostumbrados a hacer lo mismo una y otra vez sin innovar. Así que principalmente tengo que mirar afuera para inspirarme.
Mis artistas de House favoritos, los que me han inspirado más y continúan haciéndolo, son Larry Heard y Ron Trent. No diría que son del pasado, ya que siguen haciendo música maravillosa y distinta de la que hacían hace 10 años. Cada vez que necesito regresar a mis sentimientos más profundos hacia el House, los escucho.
De productores jóvenes, los que me parece que son realmente buenos son Cody Currie y Crackazat de Reino Unido, y Chaos in the CBD de Nueva Zelanda. Espero que todos ellos conserven su sonido soulful y jazzy, que no lo cambien en la faz del éxito como tantos otros artistas hacen.
Sobre fiestas inspiradoras, la mejor fiesta en la que he estado ha sido “Body & Soul” con Joe Claussell y Danny Krivit. Me sentía completamente en mi elemento, fue un momento que me reafirmó que la música House y Soul y Disco pueden producir experiencias que te hablan al corazón y al espíritu, que dan a la música de baile un propósito sanador, y que son el sonido al que siempre quiero estar más cercano porque comparto el mismo propósito cuando soy DJ.
Q5: ¿Quiénes son tus mayores influencias como productor/artista?

Larry Heard

Larry (o como la mayoría lo conoce, Mr. Fingers) es el artista que cambió mi perspectiva sobre la música electrónica de baile. Su música me hizo enamorarme del Deep House como nada antes.
Su vibra es única, y sin pretenderlo forjó un camino para todos los artistas de House que quisieran añadir profundidad a su música.
Generalmente la gente comparte sus clásicos, así que he escogido una canción más reciente, a la que vuelvo todo el tiempo.

Intento ser tan versátil como puedo, porque siempre quiero estar aprendiendo y probando distintas cosas. Todos mis discos son distintos entre sí, pero lo que tienen en común siempre es que buscan tener emotividad a través de la música de baile. Y Jimpster es tan bueno y diverso como uno pudiera desear para un productor de House. Lo admiro porque además es uno de los mejores ejemplos de ser increíblemente consistente durante los últimos 15 años, lo que es algo muy difícil de lograr. Y tiene una manera muy distintiva de representar las formas modernas del Deep House, sin sonar fuera de lugar. Me encanta eso.
Kerri Chandler

Kerri es la crudeza, la profundidad, el soul, el impulso, la fuerza del House – todo al mismo tiempo.
Algunas de mis próximas canciones tienen mucho de su espíritu (me lo ha dicho él mismo :-)). No fue intencional que mi música tenga algo de esa vibra, sólo sucedió. Supongo que cuando uno escucha el arte de alguien por tantos años y lo internalizas, eso pasa. Así que eso lo hace todavía mejor.

¡La verdad es que mi mejor música está esperando salir! Estoy contento de compartir que hace poco firmé con Ibadan Records. Y tengo un par de proyectos que quiero lanzar en vinilo, que siento realmente son la mejor música House que he hecho. He pasado los últimos dos años aprendiendo y haciendo cosas nuevas, y realmente no quisiera esperar tanto a que esta música se pueda lanzar, pero corona está atajándonos las cosas a muchas personas. Espero poder compartir esta música con todos muy muy pronto 🙂
