As I continue to tie up 2020, which despite everything was a stunning year for disco and electronic music, here are 15 disco edged tracks which were firm fixtures on the LV HQ stereo over the last few weeks of the year over NYE and into 2021. As always the list see’s legends, up-and-comers and hot new producers sitting side-by-side with tracks mined from across the disco universe from shimmering clubs spectacles to underground gems.
And as always they are in no real order other than when they landed on the playlist so, make sure you check all the way through the list to uncover some serious heat!

Young Pulse – Bobo’s Reason (snippet) [Gamm]
Young Pulse has been a firm favourite over the last couple of years on the pages of LV online. Indeed he was our final guest on our LV Selects Series of gigs in London before Covid closed the clubs down way back in March. His productions are always outstanding, a combination of super studio skills and dj know how. Bobo’s Reason comes from the most recent of his Paris Edits series on Gamm. Huge Philly edged disco goodness, expect brass stabs aplenty, soaring vocals, huge breakdowns and energised tone changes on this powerhouse club track.

Monsieur Van Pratt – I Got Music [Sure Cuts Records]
MVP was an artist who made 2020 his own between his non stop production conveyor belt and hit label Super Spicy which cut a huge swathe through the disco world in its first year of being. This track for Sure Cut Records summed up his approach to disco, full steam ahead, feel good vibes all the way.

Tabaschek – Funky People [Ghetto Disco]
Natasha Kitty Katt’s Ghetto Disco Records found new vigour in 2020 with the ace Kosmic Oscillations EP from Natasha which we covered HERE and a strong double header EP from Spanish producer Tabascheck. Lead track Funky People with its cosmic Nu Disco stylings, free flowing synths and evocative vocal was a track imbued with a plenty of power and grace. Definitely an artist to look out for in 2021.

Austin Ato – Sylvia [Pantai People]
The first of two Pantai People tracks to feature on this list which suggests a strong future ahead for this brand new label based out in Bali. Austin Ato is an artist that we have long admired here at LV online conjuring up everything from classy disco edit business such as this to peak time house bombs and deep house gems.
Sylvia takes an evergreen apart and builds it back into something vigorous and perfectly formed to create some serious club scenes capitalising on its immediate familiarity yet flipping it completely.

Al Kent – Nice To Be [Slothboogie Edits]
Taken from an outstanding EP from the fine folks over at Slothboogie, which also features edit heat from Marcel Vogel, Davin Varda and Slothboogie themselves. This deep groover from Scottish Disco legend Al Kent has everything to keep the coolest cats moving on the dancefloor. The pulsating bassline, disco flutes, string runs and ever so sexy vocals all looped and worked to perfection for the discerning 2021 disco lovers out there.

Diogo Strausz – Emancipação [Razor N Tape]
Razor N Tape popped up right at the end of 2020 with this Latin flavoured gem from Parisian artist Diogo Strausz. The playing on this one is absolutely top drawer pairing free flowing Hammond keys with frenetic percussion and warm synth vibes which envelopes the listener from the first notes to the last.

The Shapeshifters Feat Billy Porter – Finally Ready (Dimitri From Paris Remixes) (7″)
2020 was definitely a year when disco edged funky house came back to the fore and leading the charge with some outstanding tracks, featuring much in the way of live playing, were The Shapeshifters. Finally Ready came with a slate of outstanding mixes but my favourite saw disco king Dimitri From Paris take the track off to Philly with this outstanding remix. It’s everything you would expect utilising incredible musicians, towering vocals from Billy Porter and energy aplenty as two of the finest artists in the game come together.

Delfonic – Saturday Night Dance [Nómada]
German producer Delfonic is an artist who continually delivers the goods whether via his excellent edits or brilliant mixtapes which we highly recommend that you check out. His most recent EP saw him team up with ace Colombian label Nómada Records for four tracks of disco heaven. Saturday Night Dance was party disco all they way chocka full of energy with hooky vocals, hard hitting strings, ever so funky guitar licks and a bassline that does it every time.

Spaghetti Time (Edit De Beppe Loda) [Nocturnal Hazard]
Another artist who has really impressed of late is Roman Truth so it was with great excitement at LV HQ that he announced he was starting his own label Nocturnal Hazzard. First up was a charity disco compilation featuring some of the heavy hitters of the scene including Al Kent and The Patchouli Brothers alongside some newcomers and underground heads.
My faourite track from the album was the bonkers 70’s theme tune vibe of Spaghetti Time from Italian producer Beppe Loda. Soaring strings, huge bass licks, thumping drums and brass aplenty all combine for a proper smile educing dancefloor filler.

Semi-Skimmed Edits – Get Down [Semi Skimmed Edits]
With our columnist Bustin’ Loose recently featuring Semi-Skimmed Edits Vol 2 which is just about to drop HERE I though it would be timely to feature Vol 1 of the edits series which is still available on very limited vinyl.
Featuring 3 tracks of perfectly crafted dancefloor bombs it’s a series which looks to put the man behind it James Greenwood firmly in the disco spotlight.
Get Down is a peak time hitter with huge strings, an outrageous bassline, key runs and in your face vocals.

山下 達郎 – Solid Slider (Aroop Roy Edit)
Aroop Roy is another firm fixture on the pages of LV online, he’s an artist who is fully immersed in his craft digging deep for edit’s and remixes as well as creating his own dynamite tracks. Landing around the same time as his ace Kampana Brazilian disco EP which you can check HERE was a six track bandcamp EP of disco edits plucked from across the globe.
Solid Slider from the EP takes us off into Japanese boogie heaven packed with warmth and laid back funk. It’s a track for opening nights, just wait for the incredible sax solo to kick in, totally irresistible.

Natal’ya Vetlitskaya – Look In Your Eyes (Running Hot Edit) [Mister T Records]
French label Mister T Records had a very tasty 2020 with hot releases from DJ Duckcomb and their Lockdown Edits VA compilation from where this Italo edged screamer from London’s Running Hot comes.
It’s a track that gets straight down to business with the synth bass setting the scene perfectly for the huge synths, funk edged guitars and an ever so 80’s vocal which is dubbed out to the max. Expect keys, saxophones and all manner of atmospherics to pop up across the tracks as it builds and builds throughout.

JB Edits – Encounter Of The Funk Kind [So Silly Edits]
Jerk Boy came racing to the fore in 2020 with two brilliant edits EP’s on his own So Silly Edits imprint. Both are a must have for sheer dancefloor filling disco bombs. Case in point in Encounter of the Funk Kind which we premiered a few weeks back. Packed with groove. it builds and builds via a pumper of a bassline, brass stabs, funky guitar licks and occasional percussion hits before ripping into a proper hands-in-the-air vocal. An outstanding track from an outstanding series of edits.

Hot on the heels of the outstanding Austin Ato 12″ label boss Marc Roberts drops his own disco fire in the shape of Vol 2 of Pantai People’s Echo Beach Edits. Packed with 4 tracks of looped up disco action its home to 1&0, a brass laden bomb which ebbs and flows beautifully setting the scene for a truly outstanding vocal. This is proper peak-time loved-up, hands in the air gear and a must have.
